Charity event to celebrate a 'life in music'

Phenomenal Women Inc. (Bermuda) will be the beneficiary of part proceeds from ‘Cinderella’s Ball’, the latest Caisey Family Productions presentation, which takes place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on June 24.

The event honours June Caisey’s 70th ‘Earthday’, who might also be described as a phenomenal woman, for she has been in the entertainment business for 66 years, singing and dancing her way around hotels, nightclubs and other venues.

She insists, however, that the upcoming event is not a celebration of her ‘Earthday’, but rather the honouring of her long career in show biz.

“From beginning to end the show will portray my life in music,” Ms Caisey says.

A grandmother several times over she may be, but ‘retirement’ is not in her lexicon, and these days she usually performs with daughter Phiemma, a singer who is another talented member of the large and extended Caisey clan. Indeed, the cast of ‘Cinderella’s Ball’ is proof-positive of just how talented this multi-generational family is.

Singers include Albert, Clinton, June, Phiemma and Taur Caisey and Desta (Zion) Wilson, as well as extended family members Bethanne Thomas-Raynor and Josie Underwood. Ms Caisey’s son Taur, and Phiemma’s son Desta, who is returning from London, where he is studying guitar, especially for the event.

Dancer Taitu is Phiemma’s daughter, Mitchelle (Wires) Trott is Ms Caisey’s godson and nephew, and Jevon Vanderpool-Easton is extended family.

The seven-piece Caisey Family Band (Tony Dill, Lionel Edwards, John Lee, Mike Payne, Roger Butterfield and Derek Simmons) will be joined by guest artists Taylor Rankin, and family members Dennis Moniz, Dean Smith and Gene Steede.

“Dennis will be opening the show, and the band is off the hook. It has three horns,” Ms Caisey says.

“The music and dancing will reflect various aspects of my personal life. For example, I started in the church at age four, so I was into gospel, hence ‘Wade in the Water”. ‘The Impossible Dream’, refers to my ‘impossible dream’ as a schoolgirl to do theatre, singing and dancing. All I wanted to do was entertain.”

The Bermuda chapter of Phenomenal Women Inc. has been chosen as the beneficiary of the concert, in part because Ms Caisey’s daughter Phiemma is a member and is familiar with and supports its aims, which are to help women who are struggling.

“When women get caught up in the issues of providing for their family and getting them to school, they might let themselves, and the things that matter most to them, go, so we provide encouragement and uplift,” PWI (Bermuda) president Margaret Giloth said.

“For the ones we are helping now, we provide moral support and some funding where we can, as well as offering a lot of workshops to help women unravel the things that hold them back.”

“We do a 12-step group programme for women to heal and discover who they really are so they can then go forward. You can’t go forward and pursue your dreams without clarity in knowing where you want to go,” Mrs. Giloth continued.

“Some of the women we are working with have been going around in circles, but they want to get on a new path of identity and fulfilment so our goal is to help them. We work on a woman’s inner self-development because it all begins with what is inside us.”

The organisation also partners with other local charities which help women, such as the Women’s Resource Centre. Expressing her gratitude for the financial support the Caisey Family Productions event will provide, Mrs. Giloth said the funds will help the organisation to expand its services and hopefully provide support for more women.[bul] ‘Cinderella’s Ball’ will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, and tickets ($50) can be purchased at Kit ‘n’ Kaboodle.
