Guilty of drug smuggling
A drug smuggler has been found guilty of importing more than $300,000 worth of drugs into Bermuda.
It took jurors just over an hour yesterday to unanimously convict Jamaican national Andrew Laing, 33, of four counts of conspiring to import heroin and cannabis and one of assaulting Constable Stacey Todd.
Laing's girlfriend, Teeteta Iereria, from the Pacific island of Kiribati and a mother of two, is already serving a five-year prison sentence for her role, thought to be a part of a larger drug ring.
The pair met aboard the Norwegian Spirit early last year where they worked as ship cleaners, before entering in what Iereria believed to be a loving relationship, Laing's Supreme Court trial heard her tell.
However, Laing had other motives in mind — first asking if he "could trust her," before he used her affection to help him.
Initially, Iereria declined his request for her participation but Laing "cut her off," ending their 'relationship', until she relented by later agreeing because she "couldn't stand to be without him."
On three occasions between August 1 and September 29, 2006, the pair imported 1,557 grams of cannabis and 60.06 grams of heroin from New York.
Iereria had previously testified to bringing drugs off the ship at King's Warf, in Dockyard, with packages of drugs concealed on her body and inside her shoes.
She recounted during the trial how the pair first met an unknown man and got into his car on New York's 11th Avenue in August 2006, while the boat docked nearby.
Inside, they swapped their shoes with him and wore the supplied ones back onto the ship. On another occasion in New York at a later date, they met the same man in a park, who supplied them with eight packages of cannabis and heroin.
And Laing helped strap seven packages onto Iereria's body inside the park's bathroom, with the seventh on him, when they again returned to the ship that was headed for Bermuda.
Upon their arrival in Dockyard on October 6, 2006, Police had them under surveillance and watched as Iereria left the ship minutes after Laing, acting suspiciously and wandering around the area, the jury heard. They were subsequently seen together near the Clock Tower Mall, where Iereria was found with the strapped packages, after investigators searched and arrested her.
Laing was apprehended by Con. Todd but he had no drugs on him. Then, he bolted away from her on foot after resisting arrest and pushing her in the chest. One month later, Police found and arrested Laing.
Defence lawyer Mark Pettingill portrayed Iereria as a "calm, calculated, professional courier," who was only trying to get back at Laing for dumping her. However, Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale portrayed Laing in court as a liar whose testimony could not be counted on and cited the overwhelming evidence of his guilt.
Puisne Judge Norma Wade-Miller remanded Laing into custody until July 2, when his sentencing date will be determined.
