The last birthday mini-golf competition, which was once hosted by late cricket legend Eldon Raynor, has been hailed as a huge success.

Despite rain and the cooler climate, Saturday’s Eldon Raynor Memorial Putting 90th Birthday Par-Tee was well attended by those who braved the elements to partake in the various fun -filled activities at the late Southampton Rangers and St George’s Cup Match legend’s Southampton residence.

“The event was a success and dad was smiling from Heaven,” said the late Raynor’s daughter, Wanda.

“Even with the rain, we had about 60 people and they all were smiling, enjoying the memory of dad.

“This was a rewarding and excellent event marking dad’s 90th earthly birthday and first heavenly.”

The highlight of the event was an 18-hole mini golf tournament involving players aged 8 to 73.

Oxiyan Clarke won the mini golf competition by three shots, with Ray Raynor taking second and tournament official Glen Fox another shot back in third.

The trio all received trophies as reward for their efforts while all competitors were presented with memorial trophies in honour of the late cricketer, footballer and avid golfer.

Travel vouchers ranging from $100 to $400 were also awarded to the top three finishers in two closest to the pin competitions.

Raynor passed away last November at the age of 89.

The multi-talented athlete represented St George’s in Cup Match between 1958 and 1979, amassing 738 runs at an average of 29.52 with a highest score of 79 not out. He also claimed 33 wickets at an average of 25.15 with his off spin and is one of few players to have scored more than 1,000 runs in the Western Counties competition.

After his playing career ended, Raynor became a notable philanthropist and helped provide funds for young people in Bermuda to pursue their sporting career.

It is that legacy the newly formed Eldon Raynor Up and Up Foundation is hoping to continue, with the committee in the process of submitting an application for charitable status with grants expected to help Bermuda’s young people fulfil their ambitions in athletics, academics and various arts.
