Forgiveness is the key — Imagine Bermuda 2009
Forgiving each other is one of the best ways that will lead to reconciliation in the community and a better Bermuda, according to a volunteer group. ‘Imagine Bermuda 2009’ was established with the goal of social unity of all people and races as well as eliminating disparities within the Island.
The organisation, comprised of volunteer members of the business and residential community, will hold a cultural day celebration at City Hall in Hamilton, on May 10 from noon to 2 p.m. The name of the initiative is called ‘Celebrating Mandela’s Example’ and is based on the doctrine of former South African President Nelson Mandela, who promoted reconciliation after spending 27 years in prison under apartheid.
Speaking at the Hamilton Rotary Club, Glenn Fubler, Co-Chairman of the association, paid homage to the legacy and history of Mandela and used him as an example Bermuda can follow. “Mandela was impelled by his imagination rather than by his memory and envisioned a world far beyond the confines of his experience,” he said.
“The year 2009 will mark the 400th anniversary of Bermuda’s settlement and 50 years after the theatre boycott. “And, our Island has an opportunity to promote a national conversation seeking shared visions for Bermuda.
“Our celebration next week at City Hall has been themed ‘Release, Reconcile, Renew.’ We recognise that current generations have some exemplary leaders whose ‘ways of being’ provided models for moving forward.
Next week’s commemoration will highlight the contributions of three local residents who have exemplified the Mandela theme and have stories to tell. Their stories, which are called ‘Bermuda,’ will demonstrate the same assets ‘Imagine Bermuda 2009’ hopes the Island can build upon.
