Wide range of jobs available, says Oronde
Having worked at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (the Authority) for just a year and a half, this smart 32-year-old professional emphasised the importance of the multiple disciplinary backgrounds that comprise the Authority.
“There is a general misconception that everyone has to have a specific focus to work within the Authority, but this is not true,” stated Mr. Walker.
“Some of the jobs available at the Authority include accountancy positions, research assistants, policy strategists and human resources manager positions.
“Others include jobs in the legal and Enforcement department, facilities management, public administration, corporate communications, administrations, and IT technicians.”
As the senior project officer he works in a team that reports to the Chief Executive Officer, Cheryl-Ann Lister.
“I manage a diverse range of projects related to the overall administration and governance of the Bermuda Monetary Authority.
“My responsibilities also include working with the Board’s Corporate Governance Committee in order to implement improvements to the Authority’s governance arrangements.
“This includes researching and analysing best practices in overseas jurisdictions in order to determine the appropriate and applicable governance models for the Authority.
“In addition to drafting reports and research documents for use by the CEO and/or members of the Board, I also have a wide range of other duties to perform.
“I assist with the development and implementation of the Authority’s strategic plans and business objectives, and provide operational support services to the CEO’s office.
“Part of my duty is also to provide written submissions for the Bermuda Monetary Authority’s annual budget.
“My role entails a number of skills... such as working directly with the Board of Directors, senior managers, and a diverse range of colleagues in the organisation.
“It is important that people develop excellent written and verbal communications skills, also strong analytical and interpersonal skills are needed, as well as reading, comprehending, and analysing a variety of information.”
According to Mr. Walker one should have a strong work ethic and the ability to work efficiently and effectively in an environment that is most times determined by deadlines.
His qualifications include an undergraduate degree in political science and a Masters degree in Public Administration.
Prior to his current position with the BMA he worked as a policy analyst at the Cabinet Office under the direction of the Assistant Cabinet Secretary (Policy).
As for the new facility, Mr. Walker is pleased with the building and feels that it is good for the first time in a long time all of the employees of the BMA will be housed in one building.
“The move will make it easier to communicate and collaborate with my colleagues,” he noted.
