It's Miller time again in Kemper

SOME weeks ago I said that I would bring you up to date with the Eric Kemper Memorial Tournament standings, so here are the points standings:Bobby Miller 4|0xbd|

Nigel Chudleigh and Phil Shadick 3|0xbd|

Larry Ebbin, Moses Mufandaedza, Richard Burton and Alvin Amore 3

Gary Cooper and Kumi Bradshaw 2|0xbd|

Ezra Turner, Neville Darrell and Kennedy Simmons 2

Ricardo Davis 1

<$z9.3>Bobby Miller (pictured) also won this same tournament a few years ago. It was back in February this year, during the Bermuda International Open, that Miller lost most of his rating points to Ray Trott.

Now it looks as if Miller is taking on the whole Chess Club and winning, even against the highest rated player, who is Phil Shadick. Miller won that game in round 4.

With only two rounds to go, you might say that Miller is getting some of his points back and is on top of our small chess world.

In this week’s game, Miller used a lot of tactics which were full of positional play. It was a very long game with 69 moves. It was Miller playing White and Gary Cooper playing Black. After going over the game with Cooper, I pointed out he could have won a pawn in move 13. . . . Nxb4 and not Ne5 as you see in diagram 1.

With a pawn ahead one could win a game, which is just what Miller did. In diagram 2 Miller is trying for the second time to trade queens. In diagram 3, you can see that Cooper is attacking two pawns — however, Miller is willing to give up one just to get another queen.

In diagram 4, it is Miller’s last attempt at getting Cooper’s queen. This time Cooper is forced to trade and only two moves later Miller regains a queen and Cooperresigns.

Bobby Miller: White

Gary Cooper: Black
