Dwayne Pearman produced a spectacular fightback to clinch a maiden win on the Moongate Tour at Port Royal Golf Course yesterday.

The experienced player rallied from a three-shot deficit to edge fellow professional Camiko Smith by a solitary stroke.

Pearman shot a superb two-under 69 that consisted of five birdies, including four in a row at one stretch.

“It feels good to win again,” Pearman told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s been a while but I have been working on a few things and practising a little bit.

“I haven’t really been playing a whole lot and this is my first tournament in a while.

“This is only my second Moongate for the year but I hit the ball the good.

“I hit one of two shots I really wasn’t pleased with. But outside of that I hit the ball pretty good, hit it pretty solid. It was a good round of golf.”

Starting his round on the back nine at the Southampton layout, Pearman missed the green at Nos 11, 12 and 14 and failed to save par.

Three over at the turn and trailing leader Smith by as many shots, the former Port Royal head professional had his work was cut out and responded brilliantly by making birdie on the first four holes coming in.

Pearman also got up and down for birdie at No 7 to grab a share of the lead with Smith.

He then surged ahead after his rival dropped a shot on the next hole and sealed the deal after both players made par at No 9.

Smith, the inaugural Moongate Tour Championship winner, signed off with one under, which he was pleased with.

“All in all, it was a good run today, it was pretty cool,” he said.

“I started off hot with a few birdies and Dwayne was a little shaky. But he managed to level it out and get a good win.

“‘It was pretty intense but a lot of fun.”

Amateur Eric West came in at even par to round off the podium.
