Neil is a Bermuda ambassador
Longevity in employment is almost unheard of these days, however, there are still a few old faithfuls that continue to bring a unique character and charm to Bermuda’s hospitality industry.
Without a doubt, Neil Virgil is one of a special breed. For 30 years, the barman has been bringing a special flavour to the night life at Henry VIII, that draws local diners back regularly, and visiting customers back every year.
Mr. Virgil joined the staff at Henry VIII after leaving the US Naval Annex, where he had been working. Ever since, he has charmed first-time visitors and regulars alike at Henry’s bar, where he now serves as bar manager.
“He really is an ‘ambassador for Bermuda’,” said John Ferris, the managing director at Henry VIII.
Of course, we had to ask Mr. Virgil for recommendations at the bar. His suggestions — the Dark and Stormy, Bermuda Swizzles and Yellow Birds, as well as several Henry VIII specialties, including the Henry’s Own, the Queen’s Downfall and Bootle Juice, which is a shot named for the restaurant’s piano player, Dave Bootle. The bar also serves a variety of frozen drinks, such as Pina Coladas and Daiquiris, all made fresh and not from mixes.
Why Henry’s?
“The atmosphere,” Mr. Virgil said. “The people come in and have a good time. We get lots of repeat visitors and it’s a good location. It’s like a family.”
