Fed Cup girls bounce back

Bermuda’s hopes of promotion to Group One of the Fed Cup Americas Zone were dashed yesterday as the Island’s three-girl team suffered a 3-0 defeat to hosts Uruguay at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo.

Having lost to Ecuador 3-0 on Monday, Bermuda bounced back to defeat Honduras 2-1 on Wednesday.

But in order to advance they needed to defeat the tough Uruguayans, whose win yesterday maintained their 100 percent record and guaranteed their promotion along with Ecuador’s.

Bermuda’s Jacklyn Lambert failed to win a game in her contest with Uruguay’s Maria-Eugenia Torres, going down 6-0, 6-0 while Ashley Brooks fared only slight better in the other singles against Estefania Craciun.

Brooks was beaten 6-0, 6-1.

In the doubles, Uruguay’s Maria-Jose Arechavaleta and Leticia DeMichelli defeated Brooks and Lambert 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The third member of Bermuda’s team, Caitlin Gordon, sat out yesterday’s match.

Final standings in the group saw Uruguay finish with a 3-0 record, Ecuador 2-1, Bermuda 1-2 and Honduras 0-3.
