Public cries foul over trash build-up
Trash remains on some roads a week after garbage collectors took industrial action.
The build-up of trash is a result of garbage collectors withdrawing their services last Thursday. They returned to work the next day. Media reports have stated the workers took industrial action because they want a pay increase but Works and Engineering officials and Bermuda Industrial Union officials would not comment on the reason for the industrial action.
Yesterday, Permanent Secretary of Works and Engineering, Dr. Derrick Binns, said: “Trash remains on some streets.
“Workers are out today making collections and it remains to be seen what will be left by the end of their shift. We will then need to work on getting the remaining trash collected.
“We have created drop-off points at eight locations around the island and we encourage the public whose trash is not collected to either take their trash back in off the street, to one of the drop off points or to Tynes Bay public drop-off.
“We have also made provision for truckers who wish to deliver loads of residential trash to Tynes Bay to do so without being levied a tipping fee.”
