Man admits breaking his brother's jaw

A 23-year-old Warwick man currently on probation admitted yesterday in Magistrates' Court to causing grievous bodily harm in two separate incidents — one over cigarettes and the other because he believed his victim was friends with homosexuals.

Aswad Wilson, of Spice Hill Road, pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting his own brother on June 30, whose name the Crown was unable to provide, over a pack of cigarettes.

Yesterday, Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale said that at around 7.15 a.m. that day at Wilson's residence, he got into an argument with his brother, which started after Wilson accused him of removing his cigarettes without his permission.

Subsequently, he struck his brother on the side of his face with a closed fist, requiring him to go to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital to seek treatment for a broken jaw and nerve damage.

When later arrested by Police, Wilson told them: "My brother dropped the charges, we're cool now."

And, the court heard on July 12, a man was walking east along Middle Road past the Hayward's grocery store when he noticed Wilson standing by the roadside with a group of other young men.

Then, Wilson approached the man and said, "I hear you hang around faggots," before punching him on the side of the face causing him to fall to the ground, where Wilson repeatedly kicked him in the face, rendering him unconscious.

The victim sustained serious damage to his left eye and now must see an eye specialist for his injuries.

"I'm sorry, I was under the influence of alcohol on that day, it will not happen again," Wilson told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.

"Which day?" responded Mr. Warner, prompting Wilson to admit he was only drunk during the assault on Mr. James.

In May, Wilson was placed on probation stemming from another offence, a representative from the Department of Court Services revealed, who also made known his struggles with "continued marijuana use".

Mr. Warner ordered a social inquiry report before the matter is to be mentioned on August 23.
