Two accidents left roads in chaos yesterday morning, with tailbacks stretching for miles.

At 7.20 a.m., Police attended a collision between a motorcycle and van at the junction of South Road and Grape Bay Drive, Paget.

A 25-year-old motorcyclist was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for minor injuries before being discharged.

A Police spokesman said: "It appears that the vehicles collided as the motorcycle was travelling west on South Road and the van exited Grape Bay Drive, turning right to travel east on South Road.

"The rider of the motorcycle, a 25-year-old Devonshire man, sustained bruising to his right leg and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.

"The driver of the van, a 63-year-old Paget man, was not injured."

The second crash took place at around 7.40 a.m. at Chapel Road and Middle Road, Warwick.

Police described it as "minor" and said there were no reported injuries.

However the two accidents, combined with roadworks by Belco in the area, resulted in long tailbacks for commuters in both directions.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the cable work — stretching from KEMH to a Belco substation — made the situation worse.

"These were minor collisions but it was a combination of things that really made it difficult," he said.

"The traffic is just so tight in that stretch of road anyway as there's such a narrow corner. It creates a backlog of traffic in itself, so if anything else happens this can create long tailbacks.

"Belco is also doing temporary trench work in the area and motorists are trying to jump their stop lights. Once they've turned red they're still trying to go through.

"So with these two minor collisions, everything went haywire. It made everything a nightmare."
