Technology workshops for seniors

Age Concern Bermuda wants local senior citizens to know that during TechWeek they can have their tea and technology too.

TechWeek launched at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Monday. The theme is ‘Everyday, Everywhere, Everyone’. According to Age Concern Chairman Patrice Horner ‘everyone’ includes senior citizens.

To get senior citizens involved, Age Concern is holding a special informational workshop about technology for seniors tomorrow from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Charities House Building on Point Finger Road.

“This is an excellent opportunity for seniors to learn something new about an unfamiliar topic, in a comfortable setting along with tea and sandwiches,” said Ms Horner.

There will also be a tech-tea held on Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Cathedral Hall on Church Street. “Most seniors are more comfortable with reading a book than the younger generations,” said Ms Horner. “Literacy was more important, in an era with less television and computer devices. Times have changed and seniors shouldn’t be left behind on the wave of new technology. To surf the net, to e-mail their grandchildren, even to pay the bills, seniors need to be tech-literate.”

Age Concern Bermuda is working with the Ministry of Telecommunications and e-Commerce to bring seniors into the cyber-age. They are co-ordinating an event designed to introduce seniors to the technology topics that affect their lives. The format will be a short presentation on technology information and issues relevant to today’s Seniors, like security devices and mobile phones. There will be time reserved for a question and answer session as well.

To reserve a seat contact Age Concern at 238-7525. The event is free of charge, courtesy of the Ministry of Telecommunications for TechWeek.
