Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

For some, the question seems like an unanswerable riddle, however, buried deep beneath the question comes up a debate that has lasted for more than 100 years, ever since Charles Darwin first purported the theory of evolution, along with his belief in natural selection.

However, the theory smacks in the face of religious tradition, according to the Biblical account of creation in the book of Genesis.

Next week, Mr. Robert Zins, long-time missionary to South Africa and currently general manager of Creation Ministries International in the Capetown region, will be discussing the topic of Creation versus Evolution at Paget Gospel Chapel.

“The focus of our ministry is defending the Genesis account of origins, as opposed to an evolutionary account of origins,” Mr. Zins explained in a telephone interview from his Virginia home.

“Our approach is a pre-suppositional approach. We don’t reject science; we start with a Biblical presupposition.”

According to Mr. Zins, there are two kinds of science — that which is experimental and repeatable in a laboratory setting, and historical science, which cannot be proven, only theorised.

“A person’s presupposition will direct the conclusion,” he explained.

While the message can spark debate, Mr. Zins’ message next week is focused on Christians, particularly those who are trying to blend evolution with their Christian beliefs.

“You ultimately have to go back to a literal Adam, who ate from a literal tree, which led to a literal fall — If there wasn’t an historical Adam, then it predisposes the Gospel.”

In other words, trying to incorporate naturalism into Genesis leads to rejecting the Gospel.

During his talk, Mr. Zins plans to share with the audience some of the limitations of historical science, in that it cannot be proven. He will look at some of the disastrous attempts at proving missing links, as well as discuss how the theory of uniformitarian geology, whereby it is believed that because sediment deposits slowly today and therefore must have always, has been disproved.

“In physical science, there are things that call into question biological evolution and uniformitarian geology,” Mr. Zins said. “I am speaking primarily to Christians to reexamine their thoughts on origins. Try not to mix two views that have opposing presuppositions.”

Mr. Zins will be speaking at Paget Gospel Chapel on July 19 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
