Lacrosse title race goes down to the wire . . .
LACROSSE fans have the opportunity to watch the final two regular-season games left in the Bermuda Indoor Lacrosse league.
Money Shots’ former US College standouts Andy Soucie (New England College) and Steve Michel (Scranton U) continue to be the league’s devastating one-two punch, putting on a passing/shooting clinic whenever they take to the floor.
Combined with scoring help from defensive specialist Mike Totman (Stonehill College), the Money Shots believe, that when healthy, they have no equal.
With two-way player Mike McDonnell (Suny) and streaky scorer Kirk Bridgewater, it would be difficult for local lacrosse minions to dispute their claim.
Northrox’s fortysomething veteran Ernie Theriault continues to prove that time is not his master, combining with Andrew Baron (Arizona U) and Ken Winford (Halifax Club) to produce dangerous fire power.
Rookie sensation Junior Lapoint is becoming the final artillery piece and, along with a team of “cookie cutter” defensive stalwarts, they intend on proving they are legitimate contenders.
Hammerheads captain Barry Lohan (Bermuda national team) has struggled to find the chemistry to challenge the league top dogs despite losing a few heartbreakers.
Plagued by injuries and absenteeism, the ‘Heads’ have played periods of their season without first-round pick John Bohan and with news of sniper James Robinson on the disabled list indefinitely, they will have to rely on the defensive strengths of Remy Colmet, John Bull and Bohan.
Defence man Lohan is arguably the best at his position — however, with team goals being scarce he is forced to wear two hats and put numbers on the board, creating a void that must be filled if they are to pose any serious challenge to the competition.
Steve Voloti and Rich Schneider have been stellar goalies in the indoor league. Bones Brigade started off as one of the pre-season favourites but have been unable to find consistent play. Captain Adam Szachmary has certainly done his bit and then some, sitting as one of the top scorers and playing a swashbuckling defence.
Evan Schemenauer has been his most consistent player, taking pride in his defence while capitalising on offensive opportunities. First rounder Pete Rodday has put up some numbers as expected — however, Szackmary has asked him to turn it up a notch and get hungry for the things that win games like loose balls and thrifty defence.
