Critics plan march on Cabinet

Bermudians are being urged to walk on Cabinet to protest the closure of the Medical Clinic by activist and petition coordinator, Diana Williams. Mrs. Williams came to Bermuda in 1964 and has worked as a nurse at the Private Registry and the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital before becoming an activist almost 30 years ago when a Bermudian tried to use helicopters for tourists to see the Island.

She managed to stop the helicopter tours and Mrs. Williams’ enthusiasm has helped petition organiser Jenny Brooks, who is unable to canvass the Island during the day because of her job.

Miss Brooks’ and Mrs. Williams’ most recent project is the planned march on April 10 to present the signatures they collected last month. Mrs. Williams said: “From April 5 we will not be collecting anymore signatures so we can get them ready for the march on April 10 from the flagpole on Front Street to the Cabinet building where we hope Dr. Brown comes out.”

The Medical Clinic, which opened at its current location in the KEMH in 1998 has been deemed by Government an indignity for the patients and will close.

At a demonstration at the House of Assembly last month, Premier Ewart Brown said the patients had been consulted through their doctors and the same services provided by the clinic will be offered to the patients through doctors.

However, Mrs. Williams says the feeling she gets from those signing the petition is that there has been a complete lack of consultation or plan. The petition is one of the easiest sells, she added and hopes the number of signatures will be closer to 3,000 when they set to march on April 10.

To sign the petition before April 5 visit Rock Island Coffee, Sail On stores, Aberfeldy Nurseries and Esso Collector’s Hill Tigermart.

The petition can also be found online at www.moccb.info and Miss Brooks urges anyone who does sign online to make sure they first register their e-mail through the site and then return to the website to sign the petition.
