International view of conflict resolution

Emily Epstein has travelled the world teaching conflict management ¿ and one of her favourite places is Bermuda.

Ms Epstein, who is currently working alongside co-founder and president of Insight Partners, David Seibel, teaching students at the Bermuda Insurance Institute in the Cedarpark Centre, has visited just about every continent on the globe imparting her wisdom to businesses and businessmen in a range of industries, however, Bermuda, with its relaxed way of doing business, is still her number one destination.

"I love doing this kind of work in Bermuda ¿ I find people are genuinely friendly and interested in learning and that just makes it so rewarding for us," she said.

"But the main difference between Bermuda and some of the other places we go to is that here there is an awareness in the importance of relationships."

Most of Insight Partners programmes have two members of the organisation teaching the students at the same time and Ms. Epstein believes there are benefits in working in a team of two.

"We always work in pairs because we just find it much more useful," she said. "It helps because one person can cover something that one person misses. It just seems to enrich people's experience."

Ms Epstein, who started out after studying a course in negotiation at university, joined Insight Partners full-time in 2005 and has been globe-trotting ever since.

Among the more exotic destinations to appear in her passport are Sao Paolo in Brazil, Kiev in the Ukraine and Tokyo in Japan.

"For me it is fascinating to see how these concepts from our programmes resonate around the world," she said. "For example, in order to get something out of someone in Morocco, you need to drink mint tea with them for three hours before you can even start negotiations, but if you did that in New York you would get laughed out of the boardroom."
