Honours shared at Granaway
Honours were again shared as the the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club hosted fitted dinghy racing on Sunday with Victory, Contest and Elizabeth all claiming wins during the day’s three races in Granaway Deep.
The first race for the E.R. Williams Cup saw all four dinghies flying their number two rigs in a shifty breeze of eight to 12 knots, leaving the race committee with difficulty in setting a square course.
In a race over four windward and three leeward legs,>Elizabeth <$>and Victor$>opened a good lead by the first mark with Contest left behind after a poor start.
But Contest steadily worked its way through the fleet to finish a close second to Victory. Challenger followed in third while Elizabeth retired with gear failure.
In the second race for the W.H. Bennett Memorial Trophy, started after a slight delay, Contest again fell behind early after a poor haul away from the start line. The leader at the top mark was Elizabeth who navigated the first beat almost to perfection.
In the shifty breeze a few boats gybed halfway down the run — something almost unheard of in a fitted dinghy. Again Contest came from behind to take line honours followed by Victory, Elizabeth and Challenger.
The final race of the day for the Spithead Trophy was shortened to a 3/2 race course as the breeze ranged in velocity and direction.
Elizabeth sailed a clean race to claim the trophy, closely followed by Challenger.
