New album creating a 'Buddz'

Eagerly awaited debut: Bermudian reggae star Collie Buddz.

With songs in heavy rotation from Bermuda to New York, Germany to Jamaica, local reggae artist Collie Buddz’s highly anticipated debut album has arrived.

The record — simply called “Collie Buddz”— is filled with conscious tracks that have already made a hit with listeners.

Music stores on the Island have already sold out of copies and many are awaiting more from the United States, explained Dub City owner Donovan Mckoy.

The album officially debuted in the US on Tuesday and started selling on the Island last week. So far, the album has sold roughly 475 copies at Dub City’s three locations — Hamilton, Bailey’s Bay and Somerset — and there is a long waiting list of customers from 10 to 60-years-old trying to buy it.

Mr. Mckoy expects big things for the local artist and predicts that Collie Buddz will sell between 20,000 and 25,000 copies on the Island alone. Other music stores on the Island have seen similar results: Music Box selling about 250 CDs, Music World selling over 300 and Sound Stage selling out their first two shipments with over 200 CDs. According to Sound Stage Owner, Joe Lopes all types of people are buying the CD.

He said: “It’s mainly young but a good cross-section of people — young, old, people who listen to hip-hop and reggae — people I’ve never seen before. A tourist came in asking for it.”

Collie’s Road Manager Kevin Hollness said the early release of the album in Bermuda won’t have any bad affects because every album that is sold is a recuperation for the label.

He said Collie is out promoting the album in Germany and Amsterdam for the next five days and the new video for “Mamacita” is due to be released soon. He also said Collie will be back in Bermuda at the end of the month.

The demand for Collie’s new music has hit the airwaves as callers are making requests to both Hott 107.5 and Power 95.

Thaao Dill, Progamming Manager and Radio host of Hott 107.5 said: “People want to hear his music, not because he’s Bermudian, because it’s really really good.”

Even though the album has plenty new music, Mr. Dill said the most requested song is still “Come Around”.

“I think that’s like a Bermudian classic at this point. You’re going to hear it in 2020. The new single, “Blind To You” is obviously on splash, also “Moving On” is connected to people.”

Mr. Dill said a woman called into the station explaining she had been humming the song since she heard it the day before and wanted to hear it again.

When asked about his opinion of the record, Mr. Dill said “it’s off the hook” and it is one of the best he’s heard all year.

“Nowadays the focus is on making a great record. Most labels act like it is not as important as making a great single.

Collie’s joint, song for song, it’s great. It’s just great. There’s not a weak track on it. There’s songs I like less than others but nothing is whack.”

Don Bassett, deejay at Power 95 said the response has been very good and he has been giving away CDs, posters and ashtrays.

“It’s overwhelming how many folks are trying to get the CD. No song in particular is being requested.

The CD- it’s creative. I just got it yesterday so I haven’t listened to the whole album. It’s a conscious vibe, real nice.

Mr. Bassett admitted he was the first deejay in Bermuda to play Collie’s music before his music was officially released.

The album is being sold for $21 at various outlets.
