LONDON (Reuters) — Sun-starved Britons are set to jet into the red this summer — racking up debt to go on holiday, a report shows. Some 12 million people admit to taking on debt to pay for a break away, according to a survey by credit reference agency CreditExpert.co.uk.
More than a quarter of those surveyed say they flex their credit card, take out a loan or go overdrawn to fund trips, while 6 percent admit to going into the red most or every time they go on holiday.
The poll of 2,000 people also shows a relaxed attitude to holiday debt. More than a fifth of those who go into debt admit they lose track of their spending while on holiday and 18 percent say they only think about the cost after the return home.
The 18-24-year-old age group (38 percent), West Midlanders (26 percent) and men (26 percent) were found to be the most care-free when it comes to holiday debt.
