Audit nabs thief at Premier's medical firm
A woman has admitted stealing more than $2,000 from a medical clinic owned by Premier Ewart Brown.
Angelita Morris, 23, abused her position as front desk coordinator at Bermuda Healthcare Services to dispose of patient documents and misappropriate the cash.
She pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to stealing a total of $2,306 and 36 documents relating to patients. She further admitted dishonestly destroying or concealing documents required for accounting with intent to gain. The charges span a period between September 18 and November 8, 2006.
Crown counsel Robert Welling told the court that Morris was responsible for the daily collection of funds at Bermuda Healthcare Services in The Lane, Paget.
Managers became suspicious after noticing sums of money from patients not posted on the computer system. A full audit spanning the period September to November last year subsequently revealed that 36 patient visits had not been accounted for and related documents not filed.
The Police were called and Morris was arrested on November 17.
Mr. Welling said she initially denied wrongdoing, but after Police found patient documents during a raid at her home in Bell Lane, Devonshire, she admitted the offences. The prosecutor added that Morris has a relevant previous conviction.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner bailed the defendant in the amount of $1,000 with one surety and ordered reports to be completed on her. She will appear again before the court on July 3.
