Island's lady golfers triumphant

A Bermuda women’s golf team came from behind to clinch gross honours on the final day of play when they made their annual pilgrimage last week to the Kitty Michael Invitational Tournament.

Celebrating its 29th anniversary, the event was held this year on two courses — Dolphin and Card Sound — at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida.

Bermuda lifted the Balandra Cup with a three-round gross score of 755 with Valerie Nearon (82), Katyna Rabain (83) and Patricia Morgan (84) sealing the deal on the final day of play.

A team from Southeast Florida placed second on 758.

In the net division, Bermuda placed fourth overall on 647. First place went to Lyford Cay on 608 followed by Puerto Rico on 635.

Bermuda had finished day one and day two of the tournament lying third in the gross division. Rabain opened with a round of 84, Morgan with 85 and Nearon with 87. On the second day, Ann Symonds shot Bermuda’s best round of 81 with Tracy Nash carding 84 and Morgan 85.

Bermuda have been visitors to the Kitty Michael tournament every year since it was launched in 1979 by the Women’s Puerto Rico Golf Association in San Juan.
