Who owns April Fool? It's the $73m question
On-board Jacuzzi, sauna, ‘His and Her’ dressing rooms — this yacht may be called April Fool but we are talking serious money here.
Bermuda is renowned as a destination for the rich and famous but, with rumours that she recently changed hands for $73 million, the owner of this yacht has got everyone guessing.
The custom built luxury craft certainly made an entrance when she sailed into Hamilton Harbour on Wednesday.
Moored off the south west of White’s Island, the 11 passengers and crew are just a few minutes’ from the sights, boutiques, bars and restaurants of Hamilton. Not that they need to go ashore that much. The megayacht has her own bars and a dining room to seat 14 people. April Fool was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects of Holland, built by Feadship and launched in 2006 — on April Fool’s Day, of course.
The 200 ft motor yacht was formerly known as Lionessand made the 20th spot in Power and Motoryacht magazine’s ‘America’s 100 Largest Yachts, 2006’ list. Mystery surrounds the US owner, but he or she is known to have purchased a smaller motor yacht — the original April Fool — prior to the Feadship craft.
Rechristened April Fool II, this 156 ft boat — built in 2003 — was listed 97th in ‘America’s 100 Largest Yachts, 2006’. She was recently reported sold for $47 million.
April Fool, the magazine says: “Code-named Project Lioness, this yacht became available during construction and was acquired by an experienced owner. Naturally the yacht was christened on April 1.
“Not much else is known about her.”
What is known is her current route — a transatlantic voyage from Charleston in South Carolina to the British territory of Gibraltar in Spain.
A duty officer for Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said: “She arrived on April 11 and is only here for a few days. My guess is the owner is waiting for the weather to improve.”
Travelling at a speed of up to 16 knots, April Fool (pictured) features four spacious staterooms and luxury quarters for up to 18 crew.
She has a four-deck elevator and a staircase featuring blue glass panelling etched with fish. An oak and cherry interior is complemented by furnishings in white, beige and blue.
Feadship describes the stand-out feature of the twin screw motor yacht as “the curved shape in the arch running from aft to forward like a wave. This makes April Fool very elegant and will ensure she is recognised from afar decades from now”.
On the port side sits a 30 ft San Juan SJ70 vessel, named — you’ve guessed it — Fooled Again.
