Viewers will be able to see CBS roving reporter Bill Geist’s coverage of Tillie the dog’s “artistic” visit to Bermuda as a guest of the Masterworks Foundation on Sunday by tuning in to the popular CBS television programme, ‘Sunday Morning’. The broadcast will begin at 10 a.m. on ZBM Channel 9.

Ailey director teaching local dance students

Denise Jefferson, director of the world-renowned Ailey School, is in Bermuda this weekend teaching students enrolled in the National Dance Foundation of Bermuda’s PartnerRe master class.

Ms Jefferson, who for over 20 years has overseen the development of The Ailey School into one of the premier dance institutions in the world, will teach modern classes based on the Graham technique. The technique was created by dance icon Martha Graham, and is widely acknowledged to be one of the most clearly defined dance vocabularies ever developed.

Ms Jefferson, as well as Franco De Vita, principal of the Jacqueline Kennedy School of Ballet at American Ballet Theatre, and Raymond Lukens, also of American Ballet Theatre, are the three masters who will be conducting classes for young dancers and intermediate/advanced level students. Dance teachers are welcome to observe or participate in the intermediate/advanced classes.

The master classes are being offered free of charge, and take place from today through Sunday in the dance facilities of the Bermuda High School for Girls. While the Young Dancer section is over-subscribed, there are still spaces in the intermediate/advanced level classes, and students are encouraged to participate.

Shakerchi/Harris exhibition opens today

Artists Stella Shakerchi and Justin Harris kick off the second of the Masterworks Foundation’s ‘Artists in the Gardens’ series this evening with a joint exhibition. The theme of Miss Shakerchi’s work is ‘Island Life’, and her chosen medium is oils on canvas. She has spent six months preparing 40 paintings of various sizes for the show. They feature things she has seen or is fond of during her travels cycling around the Island, and her intent is “to convey a real sense of place, and the unique sensations that being in a Bermuda land of seascape brings”.

Much of the artist’s work is “abstract, dizzying and boldly colourful”.

Mr. Harris’ work has been described as textured and almost three-dimensional. No further information was forthcoming at press time.

The joint exhibition officially opens this evening and will continue through April 26. For further information 236-2950.
