School air given the all-clear
The air quality at CedarBridge Academy has been given a clean bill of health recently, despite a teacher saying the building was infested with mould causing teachers and students to become ill.
A teacher, who does not wish to be named, said that the school was riddled with mould and some students were complaining about respiratory issues including allergies, sneezing and coughing.
And a teacher had to take leave recently because the mould overload was affecting her overall health, the source claimed.
There is a high concentration of mould, which is visible and can be smelled especially in the North Block of the school, where the cafeteria and design technology classes are housed, said the teacher.
But principal Kalmar Richards said she was not aware of any complaints about mould.
However, she was aware that a teacher was sick recently and thought there may be something in the air affecting her.
Ms Richards said consultant Dr. Kent Simmons was contacted immediately and he checked the air quality at the school and gave it a clean bill of health.
Mould spores, if there were any, would be distributed through the air, said Ms Richards.
She added that she could not recall a long term series of complaints about this matter.
Chief Medial Officer, Dr. John Cann said last week that he was unaware of the problem and said that inspections of buildings were done for specific reasons ? there are no blanket inspections.
Armell Thomas of the Health Department who is responsible Devonshire said that he is also unaware of the mould.
?This is the first I?ve heard of it,? he said.
But the teacher told : ?Kids are having asthma attacks and he (the facility manager) does know how to clean it (mould).
?The facility manager?s solution is to paint the roof or replace tiles but the problem is severe because it is on the inside of tiles,? said the teacher.
?After Hurricane Fabian some classrooms were waterlogged and flooding occurred in the lights.
?The door frames and handles are metallic but he (Mr. Smith) said it was fine to go back into the building. A lot of teachers were hesitant (to return).?
Mr. Smith did not wish to comment on the mould situation or the recent inspection of the school.
The teacher added: ?I haven?t heard of any plans to fix the situation ? people have been complaining about it for years.?
The teacher admitted that the school was inspected last week.
