Mia Fishel has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty with the United States women’s team.

The US team announced that the Chelsea striker tore the ACL in her right knee during training on Monday while preparing for the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup, which started on Tuesday. She has been replaced in the squad by Alex Morgan.

The US women’s team interim head coach Twila Kilgore, who is in charge until Fishel’s club manager at Chelsea, Emma Hayes, takes over in the summer, was bitterly disappointed by the injury.

"I’m gutted for Mia and I know the team and the entire staff is as well,’’ Kilgore said.

“She’s been very effective in camp and has worked hard to make an impact. Since she’s been getting call-ups to the national team, she’s shown a tremendous growth mindset, a desire to absorb information and has been a total team player.

“I know she’ll come back strong and hopefully be in the mix for the next World Cup. As we start this tournament, we’re fortunate to be able to add a player like Alex to the roster.

“Her accomplishments speak for themselves, she’s been training extremely hard with the Wave in preseason, and I know she’ll be more than ready to contribute in this tournament.”

Chelsea have said the club’s medical team will be taking a look at Fishel’s injury before she commences the rehabilitation process.

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm Mia Fishel has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on duty with the US women's national team,’’ Chelsea said.

“Mia will be assessed by a specialist in the coming days and will then begin her rehabilitation with the club’s medical team at Cobham. Everyone at Chelsea would like to wish Mia the very best for her recovery.”
