Daniel Augustus savoured his homecoming with victory over Adam Perry in the Bermuda Professional Golfers Association Match Play final at Five Forts Golf Club on Wednesday.

The US-based professional prevailed at the St George’s golf course by 7 and 6 to win the event for the first time in his first tournament appearance on island in five years.

“Winning always feels great but I’ve still got work to do,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette

“This was my first time playing St Regis and it was very unfamiliar but it’s good to be back home. The course is in great shape.”

The experienced player beat Arriek Douglas 2 and 1 in the first round and edged Dwayne Pearman 1 up in an exciting semi-final that was decided on the last hole.

Augustus, who competes on the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour and Elevations Golf Tour in the United States, is hoping to secure funding to help cover expenses to continue competing overseas ahead of what is shaping up to be a busy year during his time on island.

“I plan on playing the Clutch Tour this summer and fall, and hopefully coming back will afford me the opportunity to get in front of the right people to get funding,” he said.

Perry cited a lack of form with the putter for his defeat.

“Daniel obviously played better than I did and his putting was definitely miles better than mine,” he said.

“The major downfall of my round was just lack of making putts. I didn’t put myself in good enough opportunities to make the putts that I had as well.

“I think that’s all it comes down to and at the level that some of us play at now it all comes down to what you can do with the flag stick.

“But I enjoyed my match today. It’s always a good time playing in Bermuda with Daniel, who is a really good pal of mine.”

Perry edged Chris Smith 2 and 1 and Scott Roy 3 and 2 en route to the final.

“I had a good match against Chris and Scott,” he said. “I work with both of them now, they’re both my boss, so it was fun to take down both of them. I’m sure they’re going to penalise me for it at work but it was a good time.”

Roy, the Turtle Hill Golf Club director, won the consolation final by default after Pearman pulled out after taking ill.
