Bermuda hockey team narrowly beaten in bronze-medal match
Bermuda women’s hockey team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal and a qualifying spot at the Central American and Caribbean Games after losing 1-0 to Puerto Rico on Sunday.
Going into the play-off match between the teams who finished third and fourth in the group, Bermuda knew victory would not only assure them of a place in the play-offs but also a spot at the CAC Games in Dominican Republic next year.
Bermuda finished the group stage on the same number of points as Puerto Rico so a close game was expected and it proved that way with chances limited and the game goalless at half time.
The second half started in unfortunate fashion for Bermuda, who conceded the only goal of the game just 17 seconds into the second half when Puerto Rico’s Alexis Morales scored from a penalty corner.
Despite having plenty of the play and more penalty corners than their opponents in the final two quarters, Bermuda were unable to equalise, denying them the chance to return with a medal and missing out on one of the two CAC qualifying spots available at the tournament.
The Bermuda men’s team finished their competition in fifth place after winning an exciting play-off on penalties against Panama on Saturday.
After the game finished regulation at 2-2, with Jordache Rawson scoring twice, the match was decided in a shoot-out with Hemijah Bean scoring the winner in sudden death to hand Bermuda victory.
