Schools to lead the charge in recycling competition
Schoolchildren will be urged to recycle their household trash under a scheme launched by an environmental campaign group.
As part of its Race to Recycle campaign, Keep Bermuda Beautiful is challenging schools to collect tin, aluminium and glass products from their homes, with the promise of rewards to “top-performing schools”.
Angel Smith, the executive director of KBB, said: “This competition is about more than collecting cans and bottles — it’s about driving long-term environmental change.
“We’re excited to see students, families and teachers unite with enthusiasm and school spirit. The momentum already shown is truly inspiring. It’s shaping up to be a fun and impactful month for our island.”
This year’s participating schools are: Bermuda High School; East End Primary School; Francis Patton Primary School; Saltus Grammar School; St David’s Primary School, Victor Scott Primary School; and West Pembroke Primary School.
Ms Smith added: “These schools are leading the charge in instilling responsible recycling habits among Bermuda’s young people.
“Throughout the challenge, students are encouraged to bring in clean, TAG [tin, aluminium and glass] recyclables from home using reusable, branded KBB tote bags.
“Weekly weigh-ins will track each school’s progress while updates and highlights will be shared on KBB’s social media platforms.
“Top-performing schools will earn exciting prizes including grub days, pizza lunches and the ultimate bragging rights as Bermuda’s top-recycling school.”
KBB plans to relaunch the initiative in the upcoming academic year for schools that are not competing this year.
