Sexual offence defendant discharged from case
Prosecutors told a court yesterday that they would not move forward with charges against a man accused of sexual offences against a minor.
The defendant, a 44-year-old Pembroke man, had been charged with having sexual contact with a girl under the age of 14 and having unlawful carnal knowledge of the same girl.
Neither the defendant nor the complainant can be identified for legal reasons.
Both offences were alleged to have occurred between May 1 and June 30, 2021.
However, during a mention in the Supreme Court, prosecutors submitted a nolle prosequi, indicating that they did not intent to proceed with the case.
Puisne Judge Alan Richards discharged the defendant, but stated that the Director of Public Prosecutions could still seek to continue the proceedings within 12 months of the charges being laid.
