Three Bermuda College graduates have been helped on the next step of their journeys into medical careers with scholarships of $10,000 each from Roche Bermuda.

The company, a subsidiary of the global biotech firm Roche AG, offered three female students the largest individual scholarships in the college’s history as a show of its support for the next generation of leaders on the island.

The grants, which came as the two marked 30 years of partnership, were awarded based on academic excellence, strong leadership potential and a commitment to careers in science, healthcare or community advancement.

The scholarships went to Milahn Powell, who is pursuing an associates of arts and science with a biology concentration towards nursing leading to medicine, as well as Ameera Gilbert and Nahjae Rayner, both on an associates of science pre-med programme.

LaRondie Harrell, president of Roche Bermuda, said the presentation was “about more than scholarships — it’s about legacy”.

She added: “For three decades, Roche Bermuda and Bermuda College have worked hand in hand to open doors for Bermudians.

“These awards honour that history while looking boldly to the future.

“We believe in the power of education, and we are proud to walk alongside these incredible students on their journey.”

David Sam, the president of Bermuda College, said it marked “an historic first for our college and stands as a powerful testament to Roche Bermuda’s ongoing commitment to student success”.

Dr Sam said: “For 30 years, Roche has been a valued partner in education, and this gift represents a new milestone in a relationship that has continually enriched the lives of our students and strengthened the fabric of our community.”

Awardees will pursue further studies overseas before bringing their skills home in their respective fields.
