Independent candidates promise to continue movement

A raft of independent election candidates have come together and pledged to continue working for Bermuda despite incurring election losses.

A spokeswoman said the People’s Independent Coalition represented a “cohesive movement” to put people over politics in Bermuda.

The PIC spokeswoman said: “Though the 2025 General Election did not result in independent representation in Parliament, the record-breaking number of candidates and the overwhelming support from voters have proven one thing: Bermuda is ready for a new way forward.”

In the statement, the spokeswoman said coalition members would work collectively on key issues such as the cost of living, healthcare, education and economic fairness.

She said the independents would also monitor policy decisions, demand transparency and ensure that the voice of the public is heard while refining their strategies, engaging with communities and building a stronger foundation for future elections.

“The two-party system has left many Bermudians feeling unheard,” she said.

“The rise of independent candidates was not a protest; it was a demand for representation without partisan barriers.”

The spokeswoman thanked supporters, stating that the coalition would continue to engage with voters, host town halls and advocate for policies that reflect the needs of the island.

A total of 26 independent candidates put their names forward during the February 18 General Election.

Together they garnered almost 10 per cent of the vote but were unable to secure any seats in the House of Assembly.

Independent candidates have regularly run for the House of Assembly — but the standout was the late Stuart Hayward, who in a 1989 upset ousted the United Bermuda Party’s Clarence James from the strong seat of Pembroke West Central.
