Renewed spotlight on HIV after rise in cases

Residents can avail of a fresh opportunity for conversations on HIV this month, the Ministry of Health announced.

An HIV testing day and health fair is set for June 27 from 10am to 2pm at the Centennial Hall of St Paul AME Church in Hamilton.

It will also offer complimentary screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, nutrition, mental health and dental health.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: “Getting tested for HIV is a powerful step in taking control of your health.

“Early detection saves lives, protects loved ones and helps end the stigma.

“You can’t take charge of your health if you don’t know your status, and getting tested is the first step.”

Ms Wilson added: “It’s important to understand that HIV is not always accompanied by visible symptoms.

“While some may experience brief, flu-like symptoms early on, the virus can enter a silent phase lasting years without treatment.

“A person may feel healthy and yet still be able to transmit the virus. That’s why knowing your status is vital.”

The ministry said that last year, the island reported eight new HIV cases, a notable increase compared with zero in 2023 and two in 2022.

The cases were said to be adults aged 30 to 60, with seven male and one female.

The ministry highlighted that 75 per cent of cases affected men who have sex with men, and said the statistics reflected an urgent need for increased testing, education and enhanced access to care.

Free and confidential sexually transmitted infection screenings, including HIV testing, are available at the Sexual and Reproductive Health Services at the Hamilton Health Centre on Victoria Street.

The services include contact tracing, sexual health education and ongoing support.

To schedule a test, people can contact their general practitioner or call Sexual and Reproductive Health Services at 246-7711 or 444-1711.
