Pupils at a parish primary school showed off their group projects on Tuesday to show what they had learnt over their past term.

Purvis Primary School’s Showcase of Learning displayed the youngsters’ projects from each grade.

Enid Furbert-Jacobs, the principal of the school, said that they approached topics such as food insecurity from the perspective of different school subjects.

She explained: “They had an English Language Arts component where they had to write their own marketing pitch.

“They did a Funions campaign and they also had to put a media piece to the back of it as well.

“They did their own videotaping and editing that they learnt in their performing arts class as well.”

The projects, referred to as integral lesson designs, covered several topics that the students studied during their final term for the year.

The projects took anywhere between six and eight weeks to complete.

Students kept a record of their progress, plans and outcomes, including the times that their plans had failed.

Ms Furbert-Jacobs said that listing the failures was important because “what it teaches them is that they have to go back to the design process”.

More artistic and practical projects featured children creating Gombey capes with the help of the school’s community partners.

Other projects included showcases on science, language and social studies.

Ms Furbert-Jacobs said that the integral lesson design model served as a blueprint for the school’s shift towards becoming a parish school for Warwick.

She said that a driving factor of the scheme involved students discovering the methods of learning that worked best for them.

Ms Furbert-Jacobs explained that assessments could be carried out by debate, a sample of work or a project.

She added: “There’s still a place for pen and pencil and a paper test, but we also understand that children are able to demonstrate what they’ve learnt through a song or a display.”

As for the pupils, Ms Furbert-Jacobs said they “absolutely loved” the showcase, which was open to parent and the other students.

She added: “I think it’s ultimately really great for them to demonstrate how much they have learnt and the skills that they’ve acquired along the way.”
