Artists took to the stage this month to pay respects to the figures whose contributions shaped the island’s identity as well as its progress.

“The Sound of Legacy: Musical Tributes to Bermuda’s National Heroes” was held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium and hosted by the Department of Culture.

Attendees were treated to a night of performances that included Warwick United Majorettes, Jesse Seymour, the Tino Martinez Quartet, Hana Bushara, United Dance Productions and Olivia Hamilton.

Owen Darrell, the culture minister, called the evening “nothing short of inspiring”.

He added: “Through the incredible performances, we have come together to honour the remarkable lives and legacies of Bermuda’s National Heroes, individuals whose vision, sacrifice and achievements have shaped our island’s story.

“As we close, let us continue to reflect on the legacy of our heroes and strive to embody the values they stood for. May their example encourage us to be bold, to serve and to uplift one another.”

The island’s official National Heroes are Dame Lois Browne-Evans; Sir Henry Tucker; Pauulu Kamarakafego, formerly Roosevelt Brown; Sir Edward Richards; Mary Prince; Sir John Swan; Gladys Misick Morrell; and E.F. Gordon.

Student leaders from The Berkeley Institute and CedarBridge Academy read biographies detailing their leadership and impact on the island.

The event was filmed for broadcast and will be posted online on the YouTube pages of CITV and the Department of Culture.
