Erica Hawley and Nick Pilgrim compete in Magog
Bermuda triathletes Erica Hawley and Nick Pilgrim are competing today at the Americas Triathlon Cup in Magog, Canada.
Hawley is ranked third in a field of 48 elite females. The Olympian, who achieved her highest finish at World Triathlon Championship Series level when she secured 28th position in Japan on May 17, has a great chance of being on the podium for the seventh time in her international career.
Americans Naomi Ruff and Michelle Magnani are the only competitors ranked above Hawley in the women’s starting list.
Pilgrim is managing his expectations in a field of 70 elite men, where the Bermudian is ranked 47th. At the same race last year, the Bath University student finished 42nd.
“Looking at the field, top 15 would be a good result for me,” the 22-year-old told The Royal Gazette. “I think on a good day when I’m feeling it, that is doable.
“I didn’t have the best of races last year. I had one of the worst races of my season and felt terrible. Hopefully, I can turn it around this time.
“I’m feeling a lot more confident than I was a year ago so it should be a good race for me.”
Pilgrim geared up for Magog by winning the Liberty Mutual National Sprint Triathlon a fortnight ago.
“I had a nice couple of weeks training in Bermuda,” he said.
“It was great being at home for a bit. Hopefully, the heat and humidity have helped and it goes well this weekend. Liberty Mutual was a good race to test the legs and I felt really strong.”
With his time as a student at Bath coming to an end in September, the triathlete intends to continue his development in England.
“The plan is to stay in Bath for another year,” Pilgrim added.
“I’ll train full-time with my current coach Jack Hall on Bath University’s high-performance team and see how it goes from there.”
Alex Pilgrim and Lynsey Palmer are also in Magog to compete in the age-group races.
