Man chooses six months’ jail for ten traffic offences

A man has opted to serve 180 days in prison for a slew of traffic offences instead of paying almost $5,000 in fines.

Jeremiah Tyrell, 23, admitted ten traffic offences that happened on two days three years ago.

He pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to two counts each of riding on a sidewalk, having an unlicensed motorcycle, riding without third-party insurance and riding without a licence.

Tyrell also pleaded guilty to riding without his headgear properly fastened and failing to stop for police.

The incidents took place on May 28 and May 30 in 2022.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined Tyrell $4,620 for the offences and gave him the option to do time in prison, which he accepted.

Ms Anderson sentenced Tyrell, from Pembroke, to 90 days’ imprisonment for each day that the offences took place and ordered them to run consecutively.

She also banned him from driving for 16 months.
