A Bermudian studying politics has been boosted by a $10,000 bursary from an LGBTQ+ support charity.

OutBermuda has awarded its scholarship this year to Jasiah Durham.

The organisation launched the award in 2023 as a way to support education and empower members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Mr Durham, who represented Bermuda at the UK Overseas Territories Association Youth Summit in February, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in politics and Hispanic studies at the University of London.

He said: “This bursary is important to me, not only for the financial support it provides but for the affirmation it officers of my commitment to both my academic and professional growth.

“It symbolises that LGBTQ+ Bermudians, despite feeling marginalised at times, are just as deserving of opportunities as anyone else.

“This award serves as a reminder that we all have a place in representing Bermuda.”

Buddy Fleming, the chairman of OutBermuda’s board, said: “Mr Durham exemplifies the talent, drive and vision we seek to uplift through this bursary.

“His dedication to academic excellence and his desire to make a difference in Bermuda reflect the very values that OutBermuda champions — we are proud to support his journey.”
