Burglar’s sentencing adjourned until Tuesday

The psychologist who analysed a man convicted of aggravated burglary will appear in the Supreme Court on Tuesday to assist with his sentencing.

Shelton Baker, 35, was convicted on February 3 of aggravated burglary with intent to inflict bodily harm.

During sentencing submissions on Wednesday, Jonathan White, for the defence, argued that his client could have psychological problems that were not expanded on in his social inquiry report.

Puisne Judge Alan Richards adjourned the case so that the psychologist who wrote Baker’s report could share some insights.

Yesterday, the court agreed to meet on Tuesday to hear these submissions. Baker was remanded in custody until then.

The court earlier heard that on October 26, 2022, Baker approached a woman outside her apartment on Princess Street in Hamilton and held a knife to her neck while demanding to be let in.

He followed the woman into her apartment, but saw another person inside and left.

He could face up to nine years’ imprisonment for the offence.
