Bermuda dialysis centre gains US accreditation

Bermuda Home Dialysis Services has been accredited by a US organisation formed by experts with the sole focus of serving the kidney disease community.

The National Dialysis Accreditation Commission was the first dialysis accreditation organisation in the US to apply for and receive approval from the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services to certify organisations for end-stage renal disease.

This means that CMS has given the NDAC the authority to survey dialysis providers and give them accreditation if they meet the requirements, without the provider having to seek its approval.

The designation makes Bermuda Home Dialysis Services the only dialysis clinic in Bermuda to earn the recognition.

Bermuda Home Dialysis Services merged with Bermuda Renal Partners in 2022 to form Kidney Care Bermuda.

It provides comprehensive care to patients with chronic kidney disease including chronic kidney disease management, renal replacement therapy and dialysis for visitors.

The NDAC, which claims to be the only accreditation body in the US exclusively focused on dialysis, was established by nephrology experts to ensure the highest standards in dialysis care.

Irena Ashton, the cofounder of BHDS, said: “This accreditation affirms our dedication to providing the highest-quality dialysis care, whether at our treatment centre or in patients’ homes.

“It is a testament to our exceptional team and the innovative, patient-centred services we provide.

“The achievement reflects BHDS’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient safety, care and clinical excellence for individuals living with chronic kidney disease in Bermuda.”

The accreditation process involved an on-site assessment by an NDAC nephrology professional who evaluated BHDS’s facilities, technology, practices and patient care standards, and met with physicians and nursing staff.

“As we celebrate our tenth anniversary this year, this milestone highlights our mission to empower every patient to live as fully and independently as possible through advanced technology and personalised care,” Ms Ashton added.
