Caitlyn Bobb: it’s no longer a little girl’s game
Caitlyn Bobb’s action-packed August continues today when she competes in the 400 metres semi-final at the Junior Pan American Games.
Bobb competed for Bermuda at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships in Freeport, Bahamas, where she was forced to miss the final because of a scheduling conflict with the Games in Paraguay.
The sprinter made the 3,700-mile trip between the two countries, arriving on Sunday, but she insists the travel will have no effect on her legs.
“I arrived in Paraguay on Sunday, which gives me two days to prepare,” she said.
“But college has prepared for me this and if only everybody knew the amount of travelling we had to do.
“Paraguay and Bahamas are a bit farther away in another country but when we travelled to Oregon, which is a long way from where I’m based, for the national championships, we lost our luggage and we missed our flights. The long travel is something I can definitely cope with.”
Before her appearance for Bermuda in Bahamas, Bobb had not competed for her country in more than two years but she is unsure of what to expect given her season is coming to its conclusion.
“I’m at the end of my season and I’m just performing as best as I can right now,: she said.
“So I’m more just having fun and not stressing myself out. This is my first time competing for Bermuda in a couple of years and it’s very exciting.”
Bobb took her career to new heights in her last year at college after making the switch to Virgina Tech, from the University of Maryland, setting multiple personal bests on her way to again donning the pink and blue colours of her country at a major event.
“This year I’ve been in a better spot mentally and physically,” she said.
“That’s primarily due to having coaching actually tailored to my goals, which was not just barely reaching 51 seconds over 400 metres, but continually replicating 51.
“I’ve also now run under 51 multiple times and that gives me confidence. Mentally I’m now just getting older and realising what I should give my energy to and what I shouldn’t. You only have a certain mental capacity so you have to be incredibly careful to what you dedicate your mental capacity to.”
After graduating college, Bobb is now trying to make her way in the world of professional athletics and is ready for the challenge.
“I’ve just graduated and I’m really ready to see how far I can take athletics now I’m still young and approaching my prime,” she said
“I’m not going to be foolish and waste the talent that I have, so I’m glad I’ve made the transition.
“The competition in the ACC is like a nice introductory course to being a professional. I know I’m competing with the big dogs now and it’s no longer a little girl’s game, we’re women now and I’m going to leave it all out on the track.
“It’s not nerve-racking, I mean sometimes when you go out to race you can get nervous, but I’ve proven to myself that I can do it and I can put myself out there.
“I’ve been training so hard and I’m not training for nothing. It’s gratifying and satisfying to see the results coming out of all their hard work and hopefully there will be more in the years to come. This is definitely a new Caitlyn coming and showing up this summer.”
