Government campaign urges homeowners to trim overgrowth
A public awareness campaign by the Government will remind property owners about the importance of maintaining foliage that can grow into public roadways.
The Ministry of Public Works and Environment said that its message is for homeowners to “trim it back” to help keep roads and government workers safe.
Diallo Rabain, the acting minister, said: “We are asking all property owners to play their part by trimming back trees and hedges around their homes.
“Overhanging greenery is not just a nuisance — it can cause injuries, damage expensive public service equipment and slow down the delivery of essential services.
“With hurricane season upon us, untrimmed vegetation also increases the risk of storm damage and can hamper clean-up and recovery efforts.
“With some simple steps now, we can keep our roads safe, protect our workers and ensure services continue without unnecessary disruption.”
A ministry spokesman said that overgrown vegetation posed a risk to sanitation workers and government vehicles.
He said that branches had been known to scratch vehicles and break windshields, causing as much as $5,000 in damage and leading to service delays.
Government and waste management communication platforms will share instructions on how to combat overgrowth to minimise hazards.
The public works and environment ministry said that this is the ideal time for homeowners to trim property foliage.
