St David’s pursue third trophy in cricket’s home stretch
St David’s will be targeting a third trophy of the season when they compete in the Premier Division Knockout Cup this weekend.
After winning the Premier Division 50 overs and T20 leagues, St David’s face Warwick in the semi-finals today.
Victory for Ricky Brangman’s side will see them play the winner of the other last-four contest between Somerset and George’s in the final tomorrow. While their semi-final opponents finished fourth, Derrick Brangman, the St David’s captain, is not underestimating Warwick.
“I wouldn't say it’s an easy game for us,” Brangman told The Royal Gazette.
“You don’t want to take a Premier Division team lightly because they finished top four. We’re going into it like any other normal game, like we’re playing St George’s or Somerset. Hopefully, we move on to the next day.”
St David’s have to do without the injured Marcus Scotland and OJ Pitcher, who has other commitments.
Warwick coach Lorenzo Tucker, who will be without some of his key players who have gone back to their bases abroad, described the 40-overs match as a huge challenge for his team.
“The semi-final against St David’s is obviously a daunting task with the strength of their squad,” he said.
“We have several of our main players who have returned to school overseas. Luke Horan and Luke Fulton are gone, Zeri Tomlinson may be here but I think he’s unavailable, so we'll have to go with what we've got.
“We’re going to give 100 per cent effort either way and look to, hopefully, upset them. We've got the likes of game-changers in Kamau Leverock and Malachi Jones. Everything’s possible with both of them.
“St David’s are clearly favourites and they’re expected to make the final, so we’re going down there with nothing to lose. All we can promise is a close competitive game.”
