Debré Evans to lead new-look Bermuda netball team
Debré Evans has been appointed captain of the Bermuda senior team for the upcoming Battle of the Isles tournament in St Maarten and St Eustatius next month.
Evans, a defensive player, has never appeared for the senior team before, with the highest she has previously represented Bermuda being at under-21 level. Vice-captain and fellow defender Kianté Lightbourne is also in line for her international debut.
Matches against Canada, British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, St Maarten and St Eustatius, from October 21 to 26, will mark Bermuda’s coming out of international wilderness. The island’s netball team has not competed internationally since 2017, with only two survivors from that side.
“The last time the senior women's team competed was in 2017 at the International Match Series between Bermuda and the United States, held in Brooklyn, New York,” said Kimale Evans, the Netball Bermuda president, who is also one of the coaches.
“There are only two players representing again from that team, Demiqua Daniels and Jahtuere Trott.
“However, our under-21 team competed in 2018 at the United States Netball International Development Series in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2018. They played against the US and Canada, with Bermuda winning the series undefeated.
“Players from that team are Debré Evans, Sèlah Tuzo, Zakiyah Durham and Kaylee Lema.”
A number of players who were being considered are not available for selection for personal reasons. These include Asanté Chapman, Micah Pond and Akeyla Furbert.
