Overflowing canine waste bins ‘a disgrace’, says walker

Unsanitary: dog waste bins left overflowing in the Botanical Gardens (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

A dog walker has decried the “disgusting” sight and “horrific smell” in the Botanical Gardens after dog waste bins were left overflowing.

Kim Webb, who walks at the Paget beauty spot most mornings, took photographs of the public bins on Thursday before attempting to reach out to the Government to flag up the problem.

While she was unable to directly contact the Department of Parks, she said she relayed a message through the employee of a different government department that she managed to reach by phone.

Ms Webb said the staff member at that department contacted parks and called her back to tell her she had been assured that it would be a priority.

However, when Ms Webb returned the next day, the bins were in the same state, prompting her to post photographs of the mess on the Facebook group Maj’s List.

When she went back to the gardens again on Sunday morning, still nothing had been done.

The Royal Gazette attended the gardens yesterday morning and found the bins still overflowing.

Ms Webb added that the receptacles had also run out of the bags for dog owners to place their pets’ faeces inside before disposing of in the bin.

Ms Webb told the Gazette: “You walk up to the bins and the smell is horrific and it looks disgusting.

“All the dog walkers are talking about it. We go there most mornings and we are all responsible dog owners who pick up our dogs’ waste.

“The Government provides the service but doesn’t take care of it. They provide us with dog bins to dispose of the waste but then they don’t empty the bin. From what I have been told, they have not been emptied since Cup Match.

“The bins at Spanish Point Park are also full. I have seen them, and one of my friends said Astwood Park is just the same.

“I think it is disgraceful. Every single day there are two or three parked trucks in the Botanical Gardens with workers doing the weeds and gardening which is good but the bins are full.

“Tourists go and walk past it all the time and kids are running around. We want them to be pristine and something to be proud of.

“We just want to see government do its job.”

Her post made last week on Facebook drew close to 70 comments.

One poster wrote that the problem was not confined to the Botanical Gardens, saying: “All of the doggy bins in all of the national parks are full and there aren’t any bags.”

Some accused the dog walkers of being part of the problem, suggesting if the bins are full, they should take the waste home with them or dispose of it elsewhere.

Ms Webb responded: “When bins are provided specifically for dog poo, we sort of expect them to be emptied.

“These dog owners are being responsible cleaning up after their dogs. It’s the people not emptying the bins who are irresponsible.”

The Government did not respond to questions by press time.
