Nathan Trott and his Cardiff team will face a Welsh derby against Wrexham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

After knocking out Premier League Burnley in the third round on Tuesday night, Cardiff’s reward is an away tie against Wrexham, which will be played in the week commencing on October 27.

Trott added to his growing reputation after making a series of key saves as his side claimed the prized scalp of Burnley.

The Bluebirds edged their heavily fancied hosts 2-1 in an evenly fought third round cup-tie at Turf Moor, with Trott again looking assured between the posts.

The on-loan goalkeeper was called into action early to deny Lesley Ugochukwu and Armando Broja in the first half as Burnley pressed for the breakthrough.

The 26-year-old was again equal to the task after the break to deny Broja again as well as substitute Jaydon Banel twice to preserve the League One side’s one-goal advantage as the Clarets went in search for a late equaliser to force a penalty shoot-out.

Earlier, Cardiff capitalised on a dominant spell of possession when midfielder Joel Colwill broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after hammering home centre back Calum Chambers’s diverted ball after Burnley failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Things then got even better for the Bluebirds when striker Callum Robinson doubled their lead five-minutes later, with Colwill involved in the build up to the goal that earned the visitors a 2-0 cushion at the break.

Burnley started the second period on the front foot and were rewarded for their determination when midfielder Zian Flemming finally broke Trott’s resistance in the 56th minute with a curling left-footed shot from just outside the box to reduce the deficit.

The game opened up thereafter with end-to-end action as the Clarets pressed for an equaliser, while Cardiff looked to regain their two-goal advantage.

Burnley substitute Banel tested Trott twice in the closing stages of the match, but the visitors held on to secure their spot in the fourth round of the competition.

Cardiff scorers Colwill and Robinson were among five changes manager Brian Barry-Murphy made to his starting XI from the one that suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Bradford City at the weekend — the Bluebirds’ first of the season.
