Two escape after home gutted in overnight fire
A dwelling at Orchard Grove overlooking North Village, Pembroke fell victim to an blaze last night.
The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, which continued to work on the badly damaged house the day after, dispatched firefighters shortly before 1am, with concerns that two people were trapped inside.
A spokesman for the Ministry of National Security said both occupants were able to escape before crews arrived and were transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical attention.
The BFRS deployed six vehicles and 11 firefighters to the scene.
Crews in breathing apparatus set to work, but the two-storey structure was quickly engulfed by flames and partially collapsed, forcing firefighters into defensive operations.
Working from multiple sides of the property, firefighters used hose lines and later the service’s water tower to contain the fire and protect a home nearby.
The worst of the blaze was quelled shortly before 4am, but crews remained on site into the morning to extinguish pockets of fire.
Chief Fire Officer Dana Lovell praised their “professionalism and commitment”.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The BFRS urged the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms and an escape plan in place for their household.
