Nicene Creed relevant for salving our ills

Dear Sir,

This summer, I published a memoir titled Flog Your Memory, Write It Down, now available at Bermuda Bookstore. Much more, Chapter 45 features “Ecumenical Creeds as Required Reading” for my sons and grandchildren.

Two years ago, I wrote about the creeds without knowing the World Council of Churches would commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed in 2025. The Nicene Creed, created in 325 CE, conveys the Gospel message that many recognise from church services. Stephen Brown, communications director for the World Council of Churches, invited Bermuda to participate in the Nicaea celebrations. For more details on the anniversary year and Sixth World Conference, visit www.oikoumene.org/Nicaea-2025.

The Council of Nicaea, convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 CE in modern-day Turkey, included more than 300 priests and bishops who debated the nature of Jesus. This three-month gathering resulted in the Nicene Creed, the first foundational affirmation of Christianity, outlining core articles of faith still used by churches today.

Arius, a priest from Egypt, challenged the belief in Christ’s divinity, arguing that Jesus was a created being and not truly God, claiming He was the first act of creation.

The conference of theologians refuted Arius’s claims and produced the Nicene Creed, which defined the relationship between Jesus and God the Father. Constantine’s involvement played a crucial role in establishing peace among Christians. The Nicene Creed remains significant today, as it complements the full Gospel of Jesus, which includes His birth, atoning death, resurrection, ascension and redemptive work.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us all, and for our salvation, He came down from Heaven; and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made human. For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried. On the third day, He rose from the dead in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended to Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. Who, with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the age to come.
