Bermuda’s riders made multiple appearances on the podium at the Caribbean Cycling Championships after picking up four medals in Belize.

Nicholas Narraway led the way with victory in the elite men’s time-trial, beating team-mate Conor White into second position, while Gabriella Arnold picked up a bronze medal in the elite women’s time-trial before going one better and securing a silver medal in the road race.

For Narraway, victory capped a magnificent year in which he became Bermuda’s national time-trial champion for the first time before beating the best the Caribbean has to offer in Belize.

In his first year after ageing out of under-23 competition, Narraway produced a dominant display in the time-trial, becoming the only rider to complete the 32.5km course in under 40 minutes.

Narraway stopped the clock at 39min 25sec (53.58km/h average) ahead of White, who finished second in 40:12. Puerto Rico’s Christopher Morales rounded out the men’s podium, taking third in 41:17.

Arnold finished third in the elite women’s 20.9km time-trial behind Teniel Campbell of Trinidad & Tobago and Llori Sharpe of Jamaica.

All three of those riders featured in a four-strong breakaway group along in the road race.

But as the race reached its exciting conclusion the group was whittled down to just Arnold and Campbell with five miles to go and the riders approaching Belize City.

With commentators and spectators predicting a sprint finish, Campbell made a decisive break, to which the gallant Arnold could not respond. The Bermudian eventually finished 20 seconds behind the Trinidadian but she was happy rather then disappointed with her ride.

“It’s a fantastic weekend for Bermuda cycling,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne.

“To see Nic step up to the elite ranks and win in such dominant fashion, with Conor right behind him and Gabby back on the podium, speaks volumes about the depth of talent we’re developing.”
