Large wall collapses near Dub City in Hamilton Parish
A wall has collapsed near Dub City in Hamilton Parish, reportedly resulting in three motorcycles being buried in the rubble.
A woman who had been on the scene told The Royal Gazette that the incident happened yesterday at about 2.30pm and luckily did not result in any injuries.
A video is circulating on social media showing the aftermath, which included a large boulder resting on tarmac above a private road a little distance from the public road below it.
The woman said: “I got there after it had collapsed. The wall had completely fallen over on top of parked bikes. Some vehicles were completely destroyed. I couldn't even see them, but apparently there had been three bikes parked in the yard of the house.
“The wall is behind the shop [Dub City] but is part of a homeowner’s property — it is the house behind the yellow house.
“People were shook up. They heard a commotion.
“I saw they had blocked off the private road from the public road.”
Jaché Adams, the public works minister, said in an interview this month with the Gazette that a compromised wall had been discovered near Bethel Church in Hamilton Parish during road-paving works, and that numerous other walls around the island were compromised.
He said: “There are walls throughout the island that were not designed for heavy machinery. They were meant for light traffic and horse and buggy and the like.”
The minister said that Bermuda stone walls were reaching an age where they are beginning to fail and had to be reinforced.
He added: “It is part of the job but also expected when we are talking about limestone. We are talking about decades — things will begin to deteriorate.”
A large wall collapsed on to the sidewalk and roadway near Flatts Post Office in 2023, close to Whitney Institute Middle school.
The Gazette has sent further questions to the Government about measures in place to ensure public safety.
